Basic Upcycle Tutorial with the Olivia by Farbenmix

Welcome to our first ever Tutorial Tuesday!!!

Good morning my name is Tricia Whelan from Treasure Lee Boutique and I am here to bring you our first Tutorial Tuesday.

Upcycling has been taking the internet by storm in the past little while, so today we are going to join the wave. :)  You need to have a dress pattern in order to do this, but most dress patterns don't come with instructions on how to section it off to upcycle a shirt that is too small.  So, for this tutorial, I have used the Olivia by Farbenmix.  This is the dress I ended up with.

This is the portion of the original shirt I wanted. I think it was about a 12mos, and I want a size 4 dress.

Line down the middle to help me keep centered.

So, I sat it on the pattern and checked to see all that I had to fill in. I have a line down the middle of the panel, so that I can keep it centered. Whatever I do on one side I have to do on the other.

Here it is with pieces large enough to extend over the pattern. Not going for precision, I will just piece together for now and then cut to size later.

I serge and then top stitch all my seams as I go. I didn't take a pic everytime, but it makes things look much more professional.

So, since I want to use 2 more fabrics for the bottom, I measured the center line from the panel to the bottom of the skirt. Divided that in half to find the length that I needed. Measured from the center line to the outer edge x 2 for the width. Then pinned and stitched making sure the centers lined up so that there would be enough fabric on each side.  Don't forget to serge and topstitch after every seam.

Above the center panel I measured how much I would need to reach the shoulder seam. Cut an appropriate piece then sewed, serged and topstitched to center panel.

Now fold your large pieced fabric down the center line, taking care to make sure that your seams line up on the horizontal. Place your pattern piece on top and cut.

Here is the front, back and sleeves all ready to be sewn together.

Follow the pattern for final assembly and there you have it.

After my husband and I retired I started making children's clothing and selling them at craft shows, then one of my granddaughters got an American Girl doll so I started making doll clothe which I absolutely love. We love anything Disney and we are lucky or youngest daughter works for Disney so we get to go very often and of course my grandkids had have customs. I have done several big gives on the disboards and have meet some of the families which was really awesome, that is how i meet most of these people in the Main Street Boutique, and so happy to have become part of this group.

Creative CHEERific Creations

Hi! My name is Shanna , the designer behind Creative CHEERific Creations. A little about me: I am a Disney nut, firefighter's wife, my husband's best friend, mom to 3 amazing kiddos, OCD, crafty, people person. I have been sewing for almost 6 years and began on cheap little Target machine after I saw some of the most most unique Disney outfits on the DISboards. I just had to make some for our daughter for our Disney trip. My hobby turned into sewing for friends and as my ability grew, my circle expanded. I design and appliqué by machine and hand. Now, with the addition of my sweet husband, digitize. Thank you all for your support. I can't wait to design a Creative CHEERific Creation for you!
 Lots of Love, Shanna
SweetCreations by Su

Hi! My name is Susana. I am the owner of SweetCreations by Su. I am a busy house wife and mother of seven kids. I have 2 boys and 5 girls. My 4 year-old’s love for Disney and my passion for arts and crafts made me take the necessary steps I needed to start my business. My husband has always called me Sweet Su and that it is where my shop’s name came from. I started by fabricating hair accessories of all different shapes and sizes. My imagination and ingenuity continue to drive my business in areas that I did not think I would be in when I first started. I am very proud of all of my creations! They bring out the kid in me! I love what I do and enjoy working people that have a passion for what they make.

Designers of the Day

We hope you are enjoying meeting our designers! Be sure to check out the BIG giveaway we are doing for our next launch in the post below!

My name is Jeanne and I am a SAHM to 4 amazing kids. I first started sewing as a little girl when my mom would let me play with her sewing machine and make Barbie clothes out of fabric scraps, paper towels, Kleenex, and anything my imagination would allow. For many years I mainly made quilts and Halloween costumes. About 5 years ago I started sewing for my kids again and haven’t stopped since! For several years I have enjoyed being a pattern tester for some incredible designers like Carla Crim (The Scientific Seamstress) and Jennifer Paganelli of Sis Boom, Lisa Williams’ Funktional Threads, and recently Erin’s Designs. I love all things Disney and feel like I always need to be planning my next trip. I love being able to create fun clothes for kids and enjoy both machine applique and hand applique.

Hello, my name is Melissa and I am the owner/designer of MM Creations. Not a very creative name but it is my initials. I started selling under this name when I made jewelry back in Junior High, so I just stuck with it when I branched out to craft fairs.I was raised an Army Brat and moved every few years as a child. Minnesota has been my home for the last 14 years. I am the Mom to one 11 year old daughter. Who is admittedly spoiled. I have three sisters who have graced me with 9 nieces and nephews.

I always dabbled in sewing but did not really dive into it until I stumbled upon a thread on the disboards in 2009 that inspired me to design for my daughter. And next thing I know I am creating for others! It has become my true passion. I love creating and sewing it truly has brought me peace and joy.

                                             KK's Creations

Hi, my name is Kristen and I am the designer at Kk’s Creations. I have been monogramming and embroidering for about 6 years now, buying my first embroidery machine when my children were very little. This led me to learn how to sew. I would see all the beautiful boutique clothing and think I could just make that. I love the creative outlet it gives me, and being in my sewing room gives me peace and an escape from everything else. My site name is attributed to my niece, because she called me Kk when she was little. I joined the Disboutiquers when we were planning a trip to Disney and I knew I wanted to make custom outfits for my children. They were and are a wonderful group, and I am very proud to be a part of it.
